Character Name: Lyon
Species: Human
Canon: Suikoden V
Canon Point: Post final boss battle, during her “death” at the end of the game.
History:
  • 20 years prior to the events of the game, there is a succession crisis in Falena, Lyon’s country of origin. Half of this crisis is fueled by a group of assassins loyal to the crown, known as Nether Gate, who are constantly deployed to kill targets and nominally prevent a civil war, but end up spilling a large amount of blood anyway.
  • When a new queen rises to power, (Arshtat, who also happens to be the mother of Suikoden V’s protagonist) she disbands Nether Gate. But between the two events, the assassins are busy with abducting orphaned children and training them to be assassins. Lyon is one of those children, and originally trained under the name ‘Mismar.’
  • By age eight, she’s only two years away from becoming a complete assassin, but is rescued by a man named Ferid, who also happens to be the husband of the current queen. He gives her the name Lyon, and gives her a different purpose.
  • She becomes an apprentice knight to the queen’s knights, as well as bodyguard to the prince of Falena. (Named by the player since he’s a JRPG protagonist, but typically known as Frey) This role and friendship between the two ends up seeing Lyon through a lot of different situations; some more lighthearted such as trying to sneak off and explore the woods… or far more serious, such as finding themselves wrapped up in a coup against the crown by several noble factions.
  • This coup eventually turns into the Sun Rune War, as one of the central objects is a powerful True Rune (basically shards of the universe manifested as powerful magic markings that can be carried on a person’s body) that harnesses the power of the sun. The Prince ends up being a central figure in this war, after finding himself a fugitive and most of his family dead or captured, and ends up forming a resistance against the noble factions. Through it all, Lyon is by his side.
  • During the war, Lyon’s past comes out. She also finds herself on opposite ends of the conflict with a former friend in Nether Gate; previously known as Michafute and currently working under the alias Dolph. Also it turns out the remnants of Nether Gate are alive and well, and currently working under one of the noble factions, the Godwins. The two encounter and clash against each other several times during the war.
  • During one encounter and an attempt to rescue the Prince’s sister (who is currently being used as a figure head ruler) Lyon is stabbed between the ribs by Dolph in a sneak attack. The injury nearly kills her, and leaves her infirm for most of the remaining battles. She’s only saved thanks to the Dawn Rune, a lesser Rune related to the Sun Rune and carried by the Prince.
  • Lyon makes enough of a recovery to be on the battlefield, when the time comes to retake the capital from the main noble faction, the Godwins. This doesn’t prevent nearly EVERYTHING from going wrong, including meeting up with the Prince’s aunt, Lady Sialeeds, who is trying to play all sides for the greater good. They still end up having to fight her, and Sialeeds is wielding another child rune from the Sun Rune, known as the Twilight Rune.
  • In the ensuing battle and having to ward off an attack by the Sun Rune, Sialeeds succumbs to her injuries, and the Twilight Rune selects Lyon as its new bearer.
  • The Prince’s forces successfully retake the capital and reunite with his sister Lymslia, and end up capturing or killing most of the Godwin’s forces. The only thing they don’t manage to retake is the Sun Rune, which is taken from the capital.
  • After some time, Lyon, the Prince, and a group of their retainers pursue the Sun Rune and the patriarch of the Godwin family, Marscal, into the mountains and ruins of Falena. There, they fight an incarnation of the Sun Rune in order to try and rebalance the Rune and seal its powers again. Prior to the Sun Rune fight, Lyon also squares off against Dolph/Michafute one last time, and even bests him. However it takes the Prince and the Dawn Rune to finish him off for good.
  • With both battles over, Lyon’s injuries finally catch up to her, and she collapses. Everything then fades to black…
  • And she finds herself in a new world, though still carrying the Twilight Rune on her left hand.

  • Personality:
Compassionate, steadfast, and loyal. These are the principles Lyon tries to live her life by. She is an ever faithful bodyguard, with her past and the darker portions of it shadowing her current personality, no matter how she may try to outrun it.

Through much of the game’s events, Lyon is loyal and driven by gratitude to those around her; they’ve given her a chance to become a better person, instead of the assassin she was raised to be. And even now that she’s found herself away from her homeland, she will still try and embody the principles of Falena’s knights.

Lyon considers herself a knight, or at the very least an apprentice one (and that distinction is VERY important to her) and sticks close to that identity. She tries to distance herself from being anything close to an assassin, adhering to codes of honor and respectful behavior.

As a general rule, Lyon avoids attacking someone without warning or announcing her intentions. She goes for honorable combat whenever possible, preferring an upfront approach to backstabbing or similar. In terms of social interaction, she follows a similar beat.

She wears her emotions on her sleeves, and doesn’t feel OR express thing in increments; Lyon’s default mode tends to be cheery and upbeat, but she can also let out her temper at full blast when someone treads on her nerves. It takes a LOT to get her angry, but when her temper is lost, it goes all the way. Verbally tearing someone down, getting ready for a physical fight, and the like all happen. She has no patience for those who make threats against those she cares for, idle or not, or those who act in self-centered way and uncaring on who they hurt.

Tying it back into her past, Lyon does NOT like being reminded of who or what she almost became. While she’s grown a tiny bit out of freezing up and/or retreating into her own mind when assassinations and similar are brought up, those sorts of mental scars linger and can cause her stress and pain if she deals with situations similar to her past; people and places dedicated to violence and murder being the biggest. Especially if that violence is devoid of any honor she tries to attach to the action.

And yet even with her background, Lyon refuses to have it grind her down or color her outlook too much. In part because she doesn’t WANT to be the emotionless killing machine Nether Gate tried to mold her into, and because she seems to have a genuine, optimistic, self that her background never managed to snuff all the way out.

On the flip side, Lyon can be a stickler for etiquette and honorable behavior for a knight. She always tries to add an honorific or title when addressing someone, usually defaulting to “Sir” and “Lady” as prefixes. The only exceptions are very close friends and allies.

Being a disgrace to the Queen’s Knights is her biggest fear, or somehow failing the ideal she tries to live up to; in Lyon’s eyes, if she isn’t a knight, then she’s a nobody. Or worse, a killer and a ticking time bomb ready to go off.

For Lyon, being a knight and protector is everything. She devotes herself to the ideals of watching over others, aiding people, and behaving in as much of an honorable and dignified manner as she can manage. (With a few lapses here and there, as she is a 16 year old who doesn’t have the tightest handle on her emotions.)

She has an altruistic side, and a determination to aid people. She has no problems with striking out on her own to investigate too. She also tends to put the needs of others above herself, especially those she’s sworn loyalty to. And tends towards optimism. It says something when her reaction to being dead (and not knowing she’d get revived) in the true ending is to do her best to put on a smile for the protagonist.

Instead, the worst thing for her is forced idleness. Inaction is maddening for Lyon, as is not performing her duties as an apprentice knight and body guard. She is an active, driven girl, who has an eye for details; as she wanders the game with the protagonist, Lyon always has some sort of comment or observation on what’s going on. She seems to have an inquisitive side, too, and a sense of independence. For instance, she won’t hesitate to go investigate something that catches her senses, whether that’s activity on a far shore, something rustling about late at night, etc. Whether it’s a potential threat, or something she hasn’t seen before, she has a drive to give things a closer look. It can be a task to catch her by surprise, given how much she tries to train herself to notice anything, and dive into whatever is out of the ordinary.

Though for all she can observe, Lyon has the romantic finesse and awareness of a brick. Flirting flat out does not register with her, and she tends to no sell people trying to pick her up without even realizing it. She can’t figure out who is in love with who, even as an outsider to the situation.

This is pure extrapolation from canon, but it seems that Lyon may not see herself as a suitable host to the Twilight Rune (given her confused and tiny “Me…? Why did it choose me…?” when the Rune passes on to her.) It’s a royal treasure, and as a simple apprentice and former assassin, she’s anything but worthy. There’s an added complication that the Twilight Rune embodies the more destructive and violent sides of the sun, and the dying of the day’s light; something Lyon IS more suited to, but doesn’t WANT to be.

But for all these traits, Lyon tends to be sweet and gentle as a default. She’s eager to please in most of her interactions. At the end of the day, she’s a young knight doing her best to live up to the tenants of honor, and wants to keep it that way.

    Abilities, Powers, Afflictions:
For half of her life, Lyon was trained as an assassin. This gives her experience in subterfuge, such as spotting people shadowing her, and some degree of stealth. She can also identify poisons, and can conceivably pick up how to brew them and antidotes for the fairly fast. While these skills are not always something Lyon is proud of, they remain hard coded into her head and ready to be used.

Related, she also has combat training through her background and her time as an apprentice knight. Her greatest amount of ability is in her nagamaki; for reference, imagine a katana with a super long handle. This makes her effective at both close and midrange combat, and she knows her way around a fight. She also has experience in mass combat in a war zone, small group skirmishes, and even one-on-one duels.

Perhaps most importantly, Lyon is the current bearer of the Twilight Rune. The Runes of Suikoden have wills of their own, and the True Runes seem to even have a degree of sentience. Child Runes such as the Twilight Rune possess less sentience and pressing wills, but still select their own bearers. For RP purposes, Lyon may occasionally feel bursts of power or resonance with the Twilight Rune’s elements (light and fire, essentially) if she finds herself in a pressing or dire situation, and causes the rune to surge.

The Rune itself is focused on offensive spells. Specifically:

    1. Evening Dusk - Causes sleep, via summoning a miasma of dark, night-esque air. Doesn’t deal damage.
    2. Setting Sun - Targets a single enemy and calls a sphere of fire down on them, large enough to engulf a human sized target.
    3. Silent Afterglow - Targets a row of enemies, with a line of red and white light that cuts down from the sky and burns on contact.
    4. Vermilion Sky - Area of effect, and deals massive damage. A hail of red and orange orbs similar to Setting Sun bombards an area, followed by a massive explosion. Lyon only has ONE charge of this spell, making it something of a tactical nuke.

I also head canon that the Twilight Rune provides very, VERY basic and rudimentary element control; it emits light, can conjure a small flame without draining the user, etc. Though given that Lyon receives the Twilight Rune fairly late in the game events, she doesn’t have full mastery of it yet. She is very much still learning the ropes with it.

    Path Preference:
+Discovery: Lyon is an inquisitive person, particularly on the exploration side of things. She’s delved into ruins, crossed all sorts of country during the war she was caught up in, and found herself experiencing a lot in the way of new places, cultures, and customs. Most of them she’s been curious about, and eager to learn more.
+Chivalry: This one is a bit on the obvious side, but protecting others is something Lyon is well suited for. Her strong code of honor also matches her well with the more knightly side of the group, and she’s no slouch at combat, either.
    Element Preference:
+Light: Lyon is a tried and true optimist, always looking on the bright side of things, and doing her best to be a light in all but the grimmest of situations. Despite her dark background, she does her best to shine bright in outlook and personality. She also is from a game that HEAVILY leans on themes of light and the sun, all the way down to the rune she carries. Given both the canon and her own personality, this makes her a natural fit for light.
+Fire: Passion runs deep for Lyon; she’s warm in terms of attitude, and believes very thoroughly in whatever she commits herself to. While not necessarily hot blooded, she IS still highly intense and driven, with a clear amount of energy in whatever demands her attention.
+Water: Lyon also embodies water in her adaptability, approach to problem solving, and overall fighting style. She is fluid, somewhat reactive to challenges, but always able to move around them; she embodies the idea of flowing like a river. She also has a calm and tranquil side, much like a still pond, tying her to the element both in psychology and attitude. (Also, whenever I do my play throughs she always ends up with a high water affinity. Somehow.)
    Anima Creature Description:
Lyon’s Anima, named Tenei, is something of mish-mash of different creatures. The closest comparison is a chinese foo dog, with cat and dog traits thrown on top, and a hint of something draconic. Her preferred diet is fish, preferably caught with her own paws.
Egg: A black egg made of some sort of shimmering material, that color shifts to violet, crimson, and orange at the top. It is also dotted with flakes of of orange, suggesting flames or stars, and is warm to the touch. It can be carried slung under one arm, and is about the size of basketball.
Hatchling: A tiger cub sized ball of fur, with similar proportions and limb count to one as well. Her dominant color is black, which shifts to violet, crimson, and orange at the extremities, suggesting a setting sun or similar. She also has very faint speckles of violet and red along her back, which look like they may become markings eventually.
Adolescent: Is almost all leg at this phase, and hasn’t really settled into her proportions. She can jump an unusually high distance, almost like she’s aided by something unseen. Her marks have started to settle into a definite pattern.
Adult: Grows to the size of a small horse, and is just large enough for Lyon to ride. Flight capable, but through unconventional means; the marks on her can emit a strange sort of magical vent, that allows Tenei to hover. She can then move through the air with her paws, almost like she’s running and/or swimming across empty space.

Also, she’s totally a sparkle dog. I apologize for this.

    Anima Traits:
+Curious: Whether it’s a potential threat, or something that’s just new, Tenei is ready to investigate and stick her nose into it. She can have an independent streak with this, leaving Lyon behind as she takes it on herself to look into whatever catches her interest.
+Protective: With a stubborn streak to that protectiveness as well. Tenei tends to be on high alert as often as possible, and sticks close to those she deems as needing an escort. This also means she’s more than willing to take risks for people who can handle themselves just fine, and ignore their wishes… such as Lyon herself.
+Steadfast: Tenei refuses to back down once she’s set her sights on something, whether that’s food, a fight she’s ready to pick, or accompanying a person to some location. This trait borders on stubbornness, when coupled with the independent streak she can have.
    RP Sample:
Here! Note that Lyon has a Flowing Rune in the test drive, but I’d like to retcon this; the Twilight Rune can cause more than enough complications for her, on its own.
